Arakawa doesn't put anything useless in the manga. There are 3 instances that bug me recently. Instances that might be foreshadowing future events.
(1) The scar on Ed's forehead. Arakawa even kept the bandaid there for some time. However, the scar isn't on the title page or cover. Is that vanity? Or another hint that the scar will disappear?
(2) Fu's line of "feelings vs reason". It hints that Ed may have to make some difficult decisions, perhaps sacrificing someone dear to him, or in the worst case, himself. Which is not impossible. Look at the title of the book. "Full Metal Alchemist". It has that sad ring of a "legendary hero".
(3) Olivie's line of "equivalent exchange is bull shit". I thought the manga might be different from the anime, but now it's denying the fundamental idea of the series. But the tone is possitive in this case. Let's see what Olivie will do.
One speech bubble is all Arakawa need to place foreshadowing of large developments. Lin mentioned the ruin city so slightly, you might miss it if you don't pay attention. Later Ed actually visited and found important clues. Mustang's "chicks" remark refered to Lieutenant Ross, who was supposed to be killed. But of curse at that point we didn't know. She's also part of the plot that led Ed to the ruin city.
