Episode 2 (Grrr...)

Caught the 1 a.m. show again. Right off the beginning was a shocking "what the heck?"!!! It was the second season opening sequence! Then a commercial break right after! That was only 1.5 minutes into the show!! The second break was at 10 minutes, and the third one at 22 minutes. When I used to work on TV animation shows, there were only 2 breaks. YTV inserts a third one. This is making me mad...

I finally figured out why I don't like Ed's voice. There is no depth or resonance. The actor seems to be speaking from his throat instead of his diaphragm and he sounds very shallow. I only realized this after picking up a familiar voice from one of the low rank priests. That was unmistakably the voice of the grown up Enzo Matrix from Reboot! A show I worked on for 3 seasons! Now, this guy has a voice made for the hero. Hmm... maybe I shouldn't be so hard on Ed's voice. After all they do need a guy with a higher voice to play a 15-year old boy, and that itself is a limit. (That's why I support casting female actresses as boys.)

Al's acting got worse. He was just reading the lines. Rose was annoying too. Sounds like she was trying very hard to suppress normal speech into whisper. It was only at the end when she got mad that we can finally hear her. And most of the time there's no emotion. It's like, "here, I'm such a weak girl..." Yeah, yeah, you have weak acting alright.

This time they used the correct end credit sequence, that was a relieve. Because I quite like the images. But, but!! They cut it only after 20 seconds!!!! Aaaargh!!! That's close to not having it at all! I bet they'd cut it completely if the music didn't start in the last shot. The credits flew by so quickly, they don't seem to want anyone to read! This is seriously upsetting. YTV doesn't respect the people who made the show!

The formal seems to be...
  • Using the second OP for all the episode.
  • Commercial break right after the OP.
  • The minute or two of recap or starter is moved to after the commercial break. (Which is a disrespect of the director's intention. Grrrr...)
Oh boy... how long can I take this.

Since they completely skipped the OP, here are some images. But this is no comparison to the real thing...

Hm... I know they used to intrude endings with voiceover ads, usually for their own shows coming up, but they would usually come back to the ending and let it go to the end. If you're saying that there is no ending save for the first 15 seconds, then I agree, that is going the way of other TV stations and is unacceptable for an anime, which places considerable importance on op/ed. Truth to be told though, I only liked the third opening or ending, the one where they're in the elevator - later found to go under the capital city where the last few episodes take place. And I don't think I liked any of the songs in particular, which is strange as a big profile show like this should have very catchy themes. Far worse shows have had better music (in fact, the only reason I watched some shows till the last episode is because of their music). Regardless, I do not agree with cutting the ending. As for commercial break, I don't mind it that much - as long as the content is served uncut, I tolerate commericals. You should buy DVDs to avoid commercials, especially if you like the show that much. That is the only way you have to support the artists that made the show (manga is just for the manga-ka). However I'd wait another year or so until the box set comes out as the price will be way better than buying individually.

Oh! You left me a comment! Thanks for visiting~! (Now I'm embarassed.) I agree that the songs are not catchy enough. But as far as I know, Sony Music assigned their top rank artists. Ironically, the third OP (which is also my favorite) was by newbies. Sony balanced it out by hiring a well astablished singer for the ED. Oh well, worked out fine for me. The scary thing about these songs is, even though you don't like them in the begining, before you know it, you've memorized the lyrics...

Yup, when the box set comes out, I'll likely buy it. I need a job first, though. (^_^)
